What is OEE, and why measure it?
OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) measures manufacturing productivity by evaluating how effectively a manufacturing operation is utilised. It combines three factors: Availability, Performance, and Quality. An OEE score of 85% is considered world-class. Most plants run between 40–60%, leaving significant room for improvement. Measuring OEE helps identify losses, improve equipment utilisation, and enhance overall production efficiency.

Availability = Net Operating Time / Planned Production Time
Performance = (Total Parts × Ideal Rate) / Net Operating Time or Actual Rate / Ideal Rate

The Three OEE Factors

Availability
Net Operating Time / Planned Production Time
Availability accounts for all events that stop planned production long enough where it makes sense to track a stop reason. Examples include equipment failures, material shortages, and changeovers. Availability = Run Time / Planned Production Time.

Performance
Actual Rate / Ideal Rate
Performance accounts for anything that causes the manufacturing process to run at less than the maximum possible speed when it is running. Examples include machine wear, substandard materials, and operator inefficiency.

Quality
Good Parts / Total Parts
Quality accounts for manufactured parts that do not meet quality standards, including parts that need rework. OEE Quality is similar to First Pass Yield. It identifies the percentage of parts that meet quality standards the first time.
OEE Benchmark Reference
| OEE Score | Classification | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| ≥ 85% | World-Class | Excellent performance. Benchmark for world-class manufacturing. Long-term goal for most plants. |
| 65–84% | Good | Typical for well-run manufacturing plants. There is still room for improvement. |
| 40–64% | Average | Most manufacturing plants run in this range. Significant improvement opportunities exist. |
| < 40% | Poor | Low OEE — major losses in Availability, Performance, or Quality. Urgent attention needed. |
